Queen Sugar (Season 4)

After watching the behind the scenes special episode and hearing the hype about this season I couldn’t wait for the Queen Sugar Premiere. The show already takes me emotions on a roller coaster every season but lawd…. Nova has completely taken the cake this time. If you didn’t watch the season premiere last night you might want to go ahead and do that before reading ahead. This is your Spoiler Alert.

Nova Bordelone… ma’am.

I really don’t have too much to say about this episode. It does start off a little slow, but I completely understand the attempt to portray serenity and peace within the family before disaster strikes as it always does. The episode opens up with Nova promoting her book, Charley getting massages with her new hispanic boo, and Hollywood and Vi settling back down from their honeymoon and enjoying married life. Nova is like a ticking time bomb the entire first 40 minutes of the episode, however, because she’s foul and she knows she’s foul. If she truly believed what she was doing was righteous and good she would have told her family about the contents of the book and the fact that it’s releasing in TWO WEEKS!

As a writer I do feel a little disrespected by her choices to expose her families secrets. 1. They’re not her secrets to tell; point blank period. 2. why would you ever choose to divulge information about other peoples lives with out their permission… especially Charley because, sister or not, a law suit is coming Nova’s way. 3. You should want to protect your family at most causes. If your family is wrong your family is wrong but she’s pulling out some dark and dirty secrets that she should not be spilling about the people that she claims to love without even preparing them for the blow back. I’m all for making decisions for yourself no matter the consequences but she’s not even standing int he truth that this is what she’s doing. She’s running and hiding from the reactions of those she knows she’s betrayed and praying they won’t come after her because she’ll be on a “small book tour.” Girl please…

It’s nice to see Queen Sugar back on my weekly watch list for a little while and I’m anxious to see where Ava DuVernay is going to take us on the journey of season 4. I’m ready to be encouraged by Hollywood and Vi’s love which is so beautiful; to watch Charley show us something new in her “cutthroat business woman” persona while trying to stay grounded; and I’m so ready to find out how Nova gets her butt handed to her for disrespecting her family and being foul. I honestly appreciate Hollywood for how protective he is of Vi no matter where they are in their relationship; the two of them were made to read these kids and hand them their lives on a platter. The way Vi told Ralph Angel, he and Darla need to get their crap together and stop passing Blue back and forth like day old bread really had me on the floor. They are really that couple that you do not want to cross the wrong way, and Nova has definitely crossed Vi in a way that I doubt she’ll be able to recover.

Overall, I’m ready for this ride we’re going on. Ralph Angel is fine and off parole, and I love watching him and Blue interact. Hollywood handed Nova her behind briefly but I know it’s going to get worse when he reads what’s actually in the book. I just have too many emotions to even process after the episode. I have to make sure I have popcorn every Wednesday, LOL.

Be D.O.P.E. Black folk!
