Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 2 (Netflix)

I think it’s safe to say we all remember Sabrina the Teenage Witch… if you don’t remember it, you’re obviously too young to be amazing, LOL… just joking.

But really, Sabrina was a part of my childhood that was exciting and, for me, a way to live on the edge. My mother has always been very careful about exposing me to anything “dark”, so I think Sabrina was a careful quirky way to be interested in things I shouldn’t be interested in because it was goofy and perky enough that my mother wouldn’t worry about it corrupting my spirit and teaching me darkness… like how she felt about Harry Potter… but that’s a story for another time, LOL.

When I first saw Part 1 of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix I was definitely intrigued, but it seemed pretty dark and not like something I would be interested in. Low and behold, I just watched Part 2 in about 2 days… I know, I know, I have a binge watching problem… so sue me. When I first started watching this new twist on my childhood, I must admit I was a little perturbed. It’s so much more “evil” than what I recall the original being, but the refreshed story line kept me so intrigued I finished both seasons.

There are so many parts of this to address, but I would never write a review THAT long. I’ll just say, if you enjoyed the original Sabrina DO NOT go in expecting this to be nostalgic or a trip down memory lane.

Sabrina Spelman (Kiernan Shipka) introduces us to her world and her anxiety about joining the church of night and her determination to not lose her ties to the mortal world and her friends. In the first part Sabrina struggles with accepting the witch part of her that is destined to serve the dark lord, but no matter what decision she makes to get away from her predestined future, she is consistently presented with her servitude being the only answer to her and Greendale’s salvation. Ultimately, we’re stuck at the edge of our seats to determine if she’ll win her battle against evil or be consumed by the power that resides within her. Part 2 takes us down the rabbit hole Sabrina jumps into to save her town and reveals the true purpose of the Dark Lord’s obsession with her.

Honestly, my favorite part of the Netflix revamp of Sabrina, are her friends, family, and love interests. Her DOPE black best friend, Rosalind (Jaz Sinclair - When the Bough Breaks), her DOPE black cousin Ambrose (Chance Perdomo), AND her DOPE black frenemy Prudence (Tati Gabrielle - The 100), carry us through the story line in their amazing supporting roles. The show definitely highlights these 3 black characters as people and doesn’t focus on them being black people, which is probably my favorite part… because black people should be in all genres, stories, and roles. These three characters challenged Sabrina, helped Sabrina, supported her where needed, told her when she was wrong, and never gave up on her. They definitely push her to the finish line while also having their own story lines and characters developed to contribute to the story in a phenomenal way. It’s not about them being black it’s about them being black that not being the MAIN characteristic to make them who they are. They are actually just DOPE and their skin happens to be chocolate.

Overall, I loved the concept of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Netflix was smart to take a familiar idea to get watchers intrigued and yet again put it’s own twist on it to make it exciting and visually pleasing. I enjoyed watching and I definitely can’t wait for Part 3, whenever that may come. The new journey’s that have been set up for our DOPE 3 black characters also have me excited and ready to experience the development they should get due to their contribution to the plot.
